Paul Hopkins named CEO Americas (Zurich) and chairman of Farmers Group, Inc; Bob Woudstra named CEO of Farmers Group, Inc.

As part of an evolution of its global structure, Zurich Financial Services announced today that as of January 1, 2009, its International Businesses unit will be realigned into three regions - the Americas, Europe/Africa and Asia-Pacific/Middle-East. Farmers C.E.O. Paul Hopkins will assume the new position of C.E.O., Americas, and in that role he will oversee Zurich's Latin American operations. He will also become chairman of Farmers Group, Inc.

President and Chief Operating Officer Bob Woudstra will succeed Hopkins as C.E.O. of Farmers on January 1. "Bob is an experienced and talented leader with 35 years of experience with Foremost and Farmers, making him uniquely qualified to take charge of this great organization," said Hopkins. "As the architect of the Farmersfuture vision, he has made crucial and substantial contributions to Farmers' strong performance. That's why I'm so confident that this is the beginning of even greater things for Farmers. I know Bob will continue the momentum and add his own visionary imprint as he leads Farmers to Destination Greatness."

Zurich's realignment reflects the growing importance of emerging markets and will create regional growth opportunities, chances for deeper collaboration, enhanced international career opportunities and even more opportunities for operational excellence. For that reason, the Zurich-Farmers U.S. (ZFUS) shared services operations will continue to report to Hopkins, as we build off its past success and strive for even greater levels of shared service support. "After 30 years with Farmers, three-and-a-half years as C.E.O., it's with a wide range of positive emotions that I've chosen to accept this exciting new challenge," said Hopkins. "Over the past three years Farmers has gone from losing market share for almost 10 straight years to being an organization that's now growing faster than every major multi-line insurer we compete with - and doing it profitably. John Tyler                   Thomas Leavey

In 1928, an idea was born when two men, named John Tyler and Thomas Leavey, started the Farmers Automobile Insurance Exchange in Los Angeles.

They both came from farming families, and recognized that people who lived on the farm or in small towns were safer drivers than people in big cities. As a result, they believed that lower- risk drivers shouldn't have to pay as much for their auto insurance.

Through the years thousands of people - people just like you - kept this commitment alive, expanding and improving on it as the needs of the American public changed. The Farmers Insurance Group of Companies became, and is today, a forward looking and vibrant organization envied for dynamic growth and respected for its ideals and successes.


Paul N. Hopkins
CEO Americas (Zurich) and chairman of Farmers Group, Inc.

Paul N. Hopkins is a member of the Group Management Board of Zurich Financial Services (Zurich) and President U.S. Personal Business. He joined the Farmers organization in 1978 as an agent and subsequently became a Farmers employee, where he held positions of increasing responsibility in the sales and marketing area.

In 1992 he transferred to the Los Angeles Regional Office as Assistant Vice President, Regional Operations. He became Vice President, Agencies in 1995, and Senior Vice President, Agencies two years later. Hopkins was assigned as Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer in 1998, a position he held until January 1, 2000, when he was appointed Senior Vice President of State Operations. His next assignment, as Senior Vice President of Strategic Alliances, became effective April 2001. In August 2002, he was promoted to Executive Vice President, Market Management, and two years later became President of Farmers Group, Inc.

Hopkins was appointed a member of Zurich's Group Management Board in December 2004. Since April 2005, he has been Chief Executive Officer (C.E.O.) of Farmers Group, Inc. and a member of Zurich's Group Executive Committee (GEC). He also serves on the Board of Farmers Group, Inc. and is Chairman of the Board of Farmers New World Life Insurance Company. In 2006, Hopkins was named Chairman of the Board of ZFUS Services, LLC, Zurich's North American shared services platform.


F. Robert Woudstra
CEO Farmers Group, Inc.

F. Robert Woudstra is a member of the Group Management Board of Zurich Financial Services Ltd (Zurich) and CEO of Farmers Group, Inc.

Mr. Woudstra started his career with specialty insurer Foremost in 1973 as Control-ler. In 1999 he was promoted to Chief Operating Officer of Foremost, a position he held at the time Foremost was acquired by Farmers in March 2000. Effective March 2000, Mr. Woudstra was elected a Vice President of Farmers Group, Inc., and Chief Operating Officer of Farmers Specialty. In 2003 he was elevated to Senior Vice President of Farmers Group, Inc., and President of Farmers Specialty. In 2005, Mr. Woudstra was promoted to Executive Vice President of Property and Casualty Op-erations and relocated to Los Angeles. In 2007, he was promoted to President and Chief Operating Officer, Farmers Group, Inc. In this position, Mr. Woudstra was responsible for the following Business Units: Personal Lines, Commercial, Specialty, Claims, Service Operations, Prematic Services and Foremost Independent Agency Operations. Since January 1, 2009, Mr. Woudstra holds his current position as CEO of Famers Group, Inc.

Mr. Woudstra is a member of the Michigan Association of CPAs and of the Michi-gan Financial Executives Institute.

Mr. Woudstra holds a bachelor's degree from Ferris State University. He is a CPA (Certified Public Accountant).
